History

The history of Château Quintus was turned upside down in 2011 when the family business, Domaine Clarence Dillon, announced the acquisition of this beautiful property of 28 hectares in Saint Emilion. Château Quintus is located on a high promontory which is the end of the Plateau de Saint-Emilion and enjoys a majestic panorama, extending as far as the eye can see to the neighboring village and to the Dordogne valley. The originality of this exceptional microclimate is due to its diversity in terms of soils, slopes and orientations. Not surprising, therefore, that this wine was between 1844 and 1848, under its former name, Château Tertre Daugay among the 14 most sought after and most expensive crus of Saint Emilion.

For almost a century, “Bordeaux and its wines” the reference of Cocks and Féret, has consistently mentioned the property as Premier Cru of Saint-Emilion. The estate was also part of the prestigious vineyards of Saint-Emilion awarded a gold medal on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1867. Dragon de Quintus is the second wine of the property. Moreover, the inspiration for the name comes from the privileged location of the property on this promontory, as well as the history of the watchtower and its mission of defense of the village. Indeed, in Western myths, the Dragon is presented as a very intelligent being, usually guardian of a priceless treasure and a protector endowed with a great view from afar.

Terroir & Vinification

The terroir of Château Quintus is perched on a limestone promontory culminating at 62m altitude. This property consists of 28 hectares of vines, with an average age of 30 years. The vines are 66% black Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon. To control the yield and relieve the foot in its developmental period, the number of fruits on a vine is limited so that it best feeds the remaining grapes and thus allows richer and more dense juices to be obtained. The harvest is manual and received on vibrating table and sorted twice. Also, the vinification is made in stainless steel vats with a gentle extraction by pumping over or punching. The aging is done in barrels, renewed every year for a year and a half.
