History

The history of Château Mouton Rothschild is that of a magical encounter between soil, climate and the passion of a man: Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Led by two exceptional personalities, Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902 – 1988) and his daughter, the Baroness Philippine (1933 – 2014), Mouton Rothschild is also a space of art and beauty thanks to its spectacular Grand Chai, to its famous Museum of Wine in Art which brings together two millennia of precious objects associated with the vineyard and the wine, thanks also to its new and magnificent vat-house, inaugurated in 2013.

The estate belongs today to the three children of the Philippine Baroness: Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the family company Baron Philippe de Rothschild, in charge of the management of the Château, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, Vice-President. United in fidelity to the work of their grandfather and their mother, all three are committed to perpetuating the motto of the illustrious Premier Cru: “Mouton does not change”.

Terroir & Vinification

The terroir is composed of 84 hectares of vines in Pauillac, Médoc, planted with noble grape varieties from the region: Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (16%), Cabernet Franc (3% ), Petit-Verdot (1%). The estate benefits from exceptional natural conditions, both for soil quality and for exposure and sunshine. It is carefully cared for, which, from the grapes to the bottle, combine the respect of tradition with the most modern techniques: highly qualified oenologists, winemakers responsible for each plot of the estate, hand-picked grapes, grapes harvested in the vineyard. crates and sorted on vibrating tables, vinification in oak vats equipped with transparent staves, maturation of the wine in new oak barrels.

The property produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild. It comes from a selection of the youngest vines of the illustrious Premier Cru and benefits from the same care as its predecessor. The dressing of this wine is reminiscent of that of Château Mouton Rothschild since Baroness Philippine de Rothschild chose a label inspired by a drawing of the famous painter-posterist Jean Carlu.

Tasting

At the tasting, this wine offers an exuberant and intense, almost solar nose. It reveals a perfect maturity of the fruit that extends on aromas of blackberries, toast, coffee and mocha.  It is a tasty wine, silky, of a remarkable softness and delicacy.
